Duarte's Donald and Bernice Watson Recreation Trail is getting new paving, security lighting, accessible ramps, improved crosswalks and rest areas as part of an improvement project along the roughly 1.6-mile route from Buena Vista Street to Royal Oaks Park.

The city reported paving complete in its Sept. 16 update. Its latest dated update, Oct. 5, said the contractor was focusing that month on electrical conduit and footings for lighting, irrigation improvements and landscaping. Wind-powered sculptures by artist Lyman Whitaker have also been installed near seating areas at the trail's east and west ends.

Trail users should watch for temporary closures, detours and uneven surfaces and follow construction signs. The city lists expected completion as winter 2026. See the project page for updates and the city's announcement.
