City of Hope researchers report first-of-its-kind microbiome therapy, SER-155

City of Hope researchers and collaborators reported Nov. 3 on a first-of-its-kind microbiome therapy, SER-155, aimed at preventing dangerous bloodstream infections in patients receiving donor stem cell transplants for blood cancers. The therapy delivers 16 beneficial bacteria designed to restore the microbiome and fight harmful pathogens. In a multicenter phase 1 trial, it was well tolerated with no treatment-related side effects, and patients who received it had fewer bloodstream infections and lower levels of harmful bacteria linked to infection. Larger clinical trials are needed before the therapy can be approved for use. Source
